"What are the conditions in which we will be able, once again, to conceive of a world in which Xenia, hospitality, can be recovered as a guiding principle of global, regional, and local social organisation? "
-Tom Selwyn January 2021
The Xenia Series, 2021
Xenia, often translated as ‘guest-friendship’, is an ancient Greek word for a ritualised and heritable relationship with strangers, which establishes a reciprocal duty of protection and respect, or even a spiritual kinship between hosts and guests. In Homeric epics, it appears as a divine law. Started as a platform for the sharing of research, theory and fieldwork, the Xenia Series will appeal to academics and practitioners in hospitality, as well as the curious observers seeking to locate anthropological ideas on home, belonging, travel, tourism and pilgrimage. Events featuring the leading voices on these questions are held every third Thursday of each month, currently online. A full conference is planned in Summer, 2021, featuring 12 speakers, several breakout rooms and up to 3 practical workshops.
